Location &amp; Language<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mainly found in <strong>Kabale, Kanungu, Rubanda, Rukiga<\/strong>, and <strong>Kisoro<\/strong> districts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Speak <strong>Rukiga<\/strong>, a Bantu language closely related to <strong>Runyankole<\/strong> and <strong>Rukiga-Rukiga<\/strong> dialects.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The region is hilly and mountainous, often referred to as the &#8220;Switzerland of Africa.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Social Structure<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Traditionally lived in <strong>clan-based communities<\/strong>, with elders playing leadership roles.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Bakiga did <strong>not have a king<\/strong> or centralized kingdom like some other ethnic groups.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Society is <strong>egalitarian<\/strong>, with decisions often made communally by clan elders.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. Marriage &amp; Family<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Marriage<\/strong> is highly valued. Families arrange marriages with the help of elders.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bride price<\/strong> is paid, often in form of cattle or other goods.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Traditionally, girls were expected to show modesty and good character.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Large families<\/strong> were common due to the value placed on children and hard work.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4. Livelihood &amp; Land<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Bakiga are traditionally <strong>farmers<\/strong>, known for <strong>terrace farming<\/strong> on steep hillsides.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They grow:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Bananas (matooke)<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Millet<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sorghum<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Irish potatoes<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Land<\/strong> is very important in Bakiga culture; owning land means wealth and security.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>5. Religion &amp; Beliefs<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Most Bakiga are <strong>Christians<\/strong> (Anglican, Catholic), but some <strong>traditional beliefs<\/strong> remain.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Traditionally believed in <strong>ancestral spirits<\/strong> and a <strong>creator god (Ruhanga)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Spiritual healers were respected for treating illnesses and solving social problems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>7.
