Location &amp; Language<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Found in districts like <strong>Mbarara, Bushenyi, Ntungamo, Kiruhura, Ibanda<\/strong>, and others.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Speak <strong>Runyankole<\/strong>, a Bantu language closely related to Rukiga and Runyoro.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Social Structure &amp; Kingdom<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"806\" height=\"466\" src=\"https:\/\/hermitage.edify.org.ug\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Banyankole-culture-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-149\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hermitage.edify.org.ug\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Banyankole-culture-2.png 806w, https:\/\/hermitage.edify.org.ug\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Banyankole-culture-2-300x173.png 300w, https:\/\/hermitage.edify.org.ug\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Banyankole-culture-2-768x444.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 806px) 100vw, 806px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Traditionally ruled by a king called the <strong>Omugabe<\/strong> of Ankole.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The kingdom had two main classes:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Bahima<\/strong> \u2013 cattle keepers (pastoralists)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bairu<\/strong> \u2013 crop farmers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Ankole Kingdom was abolished in 1967 (with other kingdoms) and has <strong>not been restored<\/strong> officially, although it remains culturally important.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&nbsp;3. Family &amp; Marriage<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Patrilineal society<\/strong>, where inheritance and clan identity come from the father.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bride price (emihingiro)<\/strong> is very important, often paid in cows.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Marriage is highly valued, and traditionally, <strong>virginity<\/strong> was emphasized for girls.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Elders and parents are deeply involved in marriage arrangements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4. Cattle &amp; Wealth<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Among the <strong>Bahima<\/strong>, <strong>cows are central<\/strong> to life \u2014 symbols of wealth, status, and beauty.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cows are used in <strong>dowry, rituals<\/strong>, and daily livelihood.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Names are often given based on cows and their colors or patterns.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&nbsp;5. Food<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Banyankole diet includes:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Milk and dairy<\/strong> (yoghurt, ghee, butter) \u2013 especially among Bahima.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Millet bread (karo)<\/strong> and <strong>matooke<\/strong> (steamed bananas).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Beans, meat<\/strong>, and <strong>vegetables<\/strong> like pumpkin.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Milk<\/strong> is a respected food and even used ceremonially.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>6. Religion &amp; Beliefs<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Today, most Banyankole are <strong>Christians<\/strong> (Catholics and Anglicans), with some Muslims.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Traditionally, they believed in a <strong>supreme god Ruhanga<\/strong>, and spirits called <strong>emandwa<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Traditional medicine<\/strong> and spiritual healing were common before the spread of formal religion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&nbsp;7.
